What Is Lyocell? The Soft, Breathable Fabric Behind Your Best Underwear

Spoiler: the softest thing in your underwear drawer probably started as a tree.

You've been wearing lyocell for years. You just might not have known it by name.
It's in your favorite sheets and breathable t-shirts. And if you've upgraded your underwear drawer lately, it’s quite possibly in the best pair you own. So let’s name that feeling.

Lyocell is a soft, breathable fabric made from the wood pulp of sustainably grown trees.

That's the short answer. The longer one is more interesting. And it explains why, once you make the switch, cotton starts to feel a little… basic.

What is lyocell, exactly?

Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fiber. "Semi" because it begins somewhere completely natural, usually eucalyptus wood, and gets turned into fabric through a modern, clean process.

The result is a sweet spot most fabrics never reach. Softer than cotton, more breathable than polyester, and better at handling moisture than either one. Plus, it feels expensive, minus the out-of-reach price tag.

You'll find it in bedding, denim, tailored shirting,and activewear. Basically anywhere softness and performance really matter. And done well,  in underwear that makes the value-pack feel like a rough draft.

Hang on… Is Tencel the same as lyocell?

Yes. Impressed you caught that.

Tencel is simply the best-known name for lyocell: a branded version made by an Austrian company called Lenzing, held to a higher environmental and quality standard. 

So when you spot "Tencel," "Tencel Lyocell," or plain old "lyocell" on a label, you're looking at very close relatives. Often the exact same thing.

It’s like Band-Aid—technically a brand name, but used as a catch-all term. All Tencel is lyocell. But not all lyocell is Tencel. This is a helpful distinction if you care where your fabric comes from.

What is lyocell made from, and how?

So what are lyocell and Tencel actually made of? Short answer: trees.

Here's the part that sounds like magic but is really just smart chemistry. It starts with pulp from fast-growing, responsibly farmed trees. That pulp is dissolved into a liquid, then pushed through tiny openings to form fibers, which are spun into yarn and woven into the fabric you'll eventually never get tired of wearing.

The clever bit is in the process itself. It runs in a closed loop. The solvent used to dissolve the wood gets captured and reused, again and again, instead of dumped. So the fabric that feels this good also happens to be one of the more responsible things in your wardrobe. That's a rare combination.

Why does lyocell feel so good?

This is the whole point, so let's get specific. Lyocell is:

Genuinely soft: a silk-like hand-feel that doesn't wash out after a month

Breathable: air moves through it, so you don't have to overheat in it

Moisture-wicking: it pulls sweat away instead of clinging to it

Temperature-regulating: cool when it's hot, easy when it's not

Shape-holding: no sagging, no bagging, no giving up after a few wears

Good on sensitive skin: smooth fibers, no scratch, no drama

Lyocell vs cotton: is it actually better?

Short version: for most things you wear against your skin, yes.

Cotton is familiar, cheap, and everywhere, which is exactly why it gets a pass it hasn't earned. It holds moisture, feels heavy the second it's damp, and loses its softness and shape with continued use. Lyocell stays soft, breathes better, dries faster, and holds its shape wash after wash.
